Laminated "field marshal instruction sheets" at concession stand.
The field marshal position has the following primary roles:
REFEREES AND REFEREE SCHEDULES Go to the TYSA scheduling website at www.gameofficials.net User Name: tysa Password: tysa Ø reports Ø fill in date under the drop box Ø all times Ø all complexes
The referee schedule will be pulled up. Print this schedule – select “landscape” for the printing shape, as you’ll cut off the names of the referees if you print it as a “portrait:
Print 2-3 copies. Tape one copy to the mechanical room door inside the concession stand as the referees go to this door to double check their schedule. Retain one for yourself and pass it on to your replacement. Make notes of any changes to the referee schedule and apprise Anne Wright at anne_wright@mindspring.com of any issues (no shows, etc). If a referee fails to show up or you have an issue with a referee, feel free to call Anne at either 770 736-0850 or 404 409-4814. Keep a cell phone with you and introduce yourself to the concession stand employees and provide them with your cell phone number. Please wear the field marshal vest during your duty. TASK DETAILS 1) FACILITATOR OF FIELD SET UP AND BREAK DOWN: Your first task of the morning is to acquire the keys to the facility. They are in the concrete block house next to the parking lot between fields 1-2. You should be issued a key to open the concrete block house and another key to open the lock box located on the wall next to the door. These keys will open all goals and all locks, with the exception of the uniform side of the trailer. The concrete block house also has the stakes and flags for fields 1, 2 and 3. Take these items out and put them near the each field and unlock each goal. There are only two hammers to use to knock the stakes in place – so you’ll need to help get them where they need to be. Stakes and flags for field 5 are in the mechanical room inside the concession stand. You’ll need to put those out at field 5 and unlock those goals as well. Also unlock the goals for the 3 fields within field 4. Flags and stakes are not used for goals on field 4. Livsey/Henderson 6 is also your responsibility. The flags and stakes are in the grey metal locker located next to the street at mid-field. Unlock that locker and unlock the goals before the first game. The role of the coaches in set up and break down is reviewed in every pre-season meeting…however, you will need to remind coaches to break down the fields each time. This is not the responsibility of visiting teams. 2) TIME MANAGER You may, on occasion, find that you have to urge games along. In select games, if the game is in excess of 15 minutes late the opposing team as the prerogative to refuse to play. If you observe a team missing a coach, urge a parent to step in to get the game started. 3) REFEREE COORDINATION There are times that the referees are running late or simply don’t show up. Your first choice option is to call Anne Wright (numbers above). If you cannot reach her, you may be called upon to make decisions regarding the shifting of referees. Keep the following in mind: 1) Blue badge referees (grade 9) can handle the centers or lines up to age U14 recreation. 2) Blue badge referees may handle select or academy lines – but NOT centers. 3) Black Badge referees may handle any game, center or line. 4) PEOPLE MANAGEMENT Help ensure that folks find the locations they need for their games. It is quite common for players and entire teams to show up at the main complex for games scheduled at Livsey/Henderson 6. The concession stand keeps copies of written directions to field 6.
5) TEMPER MANAGEMENT and ESCORT Sadly, a part of the field marshal job is to help coaches and parents keep their cool. You may find that you need to quietly amble over to a U8 coach and remind him/her to keep in low key. You may also have to ask parents of TYSA or visitors to keep in together. It’s uncomfortable to do this, but necessary. If you stand next to loud and boisterous folks, wearing your field marshal vest – it’s often enough to stop the behavior right then. If a referee sends a parent, a coach or a player from the game, you may be called upon to escort the person away from the field. Any adult dismissed from the game must leave sight and sound of the field. They are NOT entitled to stay and watch from a distance. Waiting at the concession stand usually suffices. An individual dismissed from the game is also NOT entitled to go back and “speak” to the referee after the game. If you have a serious issue with a parent, coach or player – please call Warren (404 713 5043) to assist you. You should also call the police should you feel the need. If any of these situations arise, please make sure that Nancy is apprised of the situation as soon as possible (404 219 3752). 6) EMERGENCY RESPONDER On occasion you may find that you are called upon to act quickly to close the fields in case of inclement weather. Technically the referee is responsible for stopping games – but the ultimate responsibility falls with you. If the weather is threatening and lightning is seen, clear the fields. Games may not resume for at least 20 minutes after the last lightning was observed. You may also find it necessary to call 911 in case of either an emergency or misbehavior on the field. Stay at the field while waiting for the police or EMS to arrive. Please remember that during game days – as long as a single team is playing at TYSA – no adults are permitted to be using the fields. Ask any adults to leave and call the police should they refuse to do so.
